Buxtehude (1637-1707)

Description:

The ambitious chamber works by the master of the North German organ school are performed by the best British musicians! Dietrich Buxtehude was a master of the North German organ school, known for the fact that the great Bach in his youth walked from Arnstadt in central Germany to Lübeck on the Baltic Sea coast to hear him play. He is particularly famous for his organ music, which greatly influenced Bach, but he was also one of the most important imitators of Italian music in northern Germany, contributing greatly to the development of vocal and chamber music. At the end of the 17th century, when Corelli was developing the trio sonata form for two violins and basso continuo in Italy, Buxtehude published two sonata collections in succession, which are unique in that the violin and viola da gamba play equal roles as leading instruments. Although many similar compositions have been published in German-speaking countries, Buxtehude's two sonata collections stand out from the crowd for their richness and variety. After the experience of their 2017 recording of Op. 1 (Alpha 367) on the Alpha label, Arcangelo, a group of talented UK-based international performers, has recorded Op. 2 in its entirety, which represents a further enrichment of Buxtehude's style. The bass continuo, consisting of young Thomas Danford's lute and Jonathan Cohen's harpsichord, which also excels in opera conducting, is extremely effective in complementing the two leading roles due to the absence of bowed instruments! The difference in timbre and flavor between the gamba and the violin is also highlighted in Alpha's naturalistic recording, which brings out the interest of the mysterious style that oscillates between orderliness and vibrancy.
