Khachaturian (1903-1978)

Description:

First CD release on the Melodiya label! Alexander Alyabiev is best known for his romantic song "The Nightingale". He was almost entirely self-taught in composition and fought in the war to defend his homeland against the Napoleonic invasion of 1812. After leaving the army, he composed more than 450 pieces, including vaudeville, or dramatic music, operas, choral works, ballet music, and other stage works, as well as piano and chamber music. He earned a reputation as one of the most original composers of Pushkin's time. Most of these, however, were never published and were forgotten. Finally, in the mid-20th century, 100 years after his death, thanks to the efforts of Russian musicians such as Boris Dobrokotov, Nikolai Platonov, and Georgy Kirkor, some of his last manuscripts were published and his diverse works became known. This 3-CD set includes various chamber works by Alyabiev, as well as dramatic and ballet music. The performances are by soloists such as Levon Ambartsmyan, Alexander Knyazev, Mikhail Voskresensky, and Eduard Grach, as well as the Moscow Trio and the Rimsky=Korsakov Quartet, all of whom were active in the Soviet Union in the second half of the 20th century. Most of the performances are on CD for the first time. Some of the pieces are rare, such as the overture to "The Village Philosopher," performed by Nikolai Anosov and the Soviet State Symphony Orchestra in 1948. Alyabiev's rich melodic beauty can be enjoyed on this album. Naxos Japan
