The Ghost Returns to Versailles! The Ghost of Versailles" was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in 1991. Based on Beaumarchais' "The Barber of Seville" and "The Marriage of Figaro," it is set in the devastated Palace of Versailles after the French Revolution and features the ghosts of Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and Beaumarchais, as well as the familiar characters from the opera. The surrealistic story is told with a mixture of the ghosts of Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and Beaumarchais, as well as Figaro, Susanna, and others familiar from the opera. The slapstick story also reflects the heavy content of the original work. The album, a joint production of the Glimmerglass Festival in the U.S. and Versailles, features singers from the U.S. and Canada alongside musicians from Versailles.
