[Thoroughly examine the sound of Beethoven's time! The complete symphonies of the "ReSound Beethoven" series, which Martin Haselböck and the Vienna Academy Orchestra have been working on since 2014 and will be completed in 2020, the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. The series uses instruments from the composer's lifetime, or reconstructions of them, as well as the places where they were first performed or historical buildings that were similar to the places where they were first performed, in the belief that the performance venue is also the instrument that sounds with the composer. In the "Ninth," the chorus and soloist are placed in front of the orchestra, as was customary at the time. The powerful performance highlights the splendor of the work, which is one of the great attractions of this series. This is a good project for a commemorative year. The complete set of the Piano Concertos (six pieces in all, including an arranged version of the Violin Concerto) with Gottlieb Wallisch as soloist is also available as a separate set on the CPO label (555329).
