This new recording of the "Requiem" by Yommelli, a leading figure of the Neapolitan school of music who has recently been reevaluated, is a release that is sure to attract the attention of listeners. Niccolò Jommelli was the same age as C.P.E. Bach, the second son of the great Bach, and the reformed opera composer Gluck, and was an important representative of the Neapolitan school of music, along with Porpora, Leo, and Pergolesi, who were a little older. This brilliant composer, who left Italy and spent his glory days as a court composer in Stuttgart, produced a series of masterpieces in the Gallant style of the pre-classical school and even recitative operas in his own unique style, but this recording is a rare religious work. His "Requiem," with its serenity befitting church music mixed with the passion typical of the Neapolitan school, was highly praised by his contemporaries, so much so that a number of manuscripts of the work have survived. The Ghislieri Ensemble, a group of Italian talents who have created a sensation with their revival and recording of Pergolesi's visionary Mass, will join Sandrine Piau and other solo singers for a superb interpretation of this beautiful work.With its rich commentary, this new recording is a reminder of Yommelli's talent, which has never been limited to opera.
