The first collection in the new series "Music for the Theater" by Markus Bosch and Capella Aquileia focuses on "The Ruins of Athens," composed for the opening of the newly built German Theater in Pest (now Budapest), Hungary, and first performed in 1812. Known as the "Turkish March," "The Ruins of Athens" is now often performed only in its music, but the text actually contains important explanations, including political metaphors. So Dresden-based playwright Kai Wessler has prepared a new text that combines the original Kotzebue play with Schiller's poetry, creating a universal story for the 21st century, free from Beethoven's era.
