Reger's chamber music occupies a unique place in the history of music. The Clarinet Quintet, written in his later years, was inspired by Mozart's work of the same name, and the complex counterpoint and difficult melodies of his earlier works have been overshadowed by the beautiful and peaceful atmosphere that pervades the entire work. Thorsten Johans, principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, plays a magnificent clarinet to enhance the work. The seldom-performed String Sextet is a profoundly atmospheric piece that shows the influence of Brahms. The work was never performed during his lifetime, and it was not until 1930, when the score was finally published, that its reputation was established. The rich harmonies spun by the Diogenes Quartet blend with the mid-range sounds of Roland Grassle and Wen-Sing Yang to create a thick tone. Naxos Japan
