Description:

The music of Franck, who was born and raised in the eastern part of Belgium near German-speaking countries, is more famous for his major works after he became a naturalized citizen of France and became a member of the French National Music Society in Paris than for the works of his younger days. The symphonies and the A-major V His symphonies and A major violin sonatas are representative, but even before the founding of the Société Nationale de Musique Franck was known as an organist of rare ability. Surprisingly, there are some important works from the middle and late 19th century, such as Liszt and Brahms, which confront Christianity anew from the perspective of a 19th century artist, but surprisingly few recordings have been made. The Atonement" is one such work, and other than the frequently performed interlude (also known as the "Atonement" movement of the symphonic poem), there have been almost no new recordings of the work since the Plasson recordings of the 20th century. In Franck's "Atonement," the story unfolds around a solo mezzo-soprano and chorus, while the orchestra weaves a magnificent musical picture scroll.Although sometimes called an oratorio, Franck himself titled it "Poeme-Symphonie," which clearly indicates that the main emphasis is on orchestral treatment. The conductor this time is Hervé Niquet, a French conductor of ancient instruments who has worked on baroque works by Charpentier and Lully for NAXOS and ALPHA, and on Handel's "Music on the Water" for Glossa. This is a rare opportunity to hear this unknown masterpiece performed by a master conductor who has rapidly become a recording artist of modern French works such as Saint-Saens and Dukas, and the Royal Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, the most famous orchestra in the composer's homeland of Belgium.
