Description:
The Portuguese composer Bontempo is known to choral fans for his "Requiem. His father was an Italian oboist at the court of Lisbon, and Bontempo also studied music there before becoming active as an orchestrator and pianist. 1801 he went to Paris, and a few years later he left for England, hating Napoleon who invaded Portugal. In the meantime, he was active as a composer, and his works were published by his close friends, such as Pleyel and Clementi. The "Requiem" and the piano sonatas included here were composed during this period, and while both are in the classical style, they are colorful and flamboyant works that absorb the developing art and culture of Paris and London. The form varies from two to four movements, and the early works are all "grand sonatas," but the playing time is around 15 minutes. The last sonata, again using the title "Grand Sonata," is a nearly 30-minute work that represents a major expressive and technical development.Returning to Portugal around 1820, Bontempo founded the Philharmonic Society to promote the most advanced orchestral works of the time in his native country, and in later years became the first director of the conservatory established in Lisbon.
