Two Romantic symphonies by Mariss Jansons: In 1815, the 18-year-old Schubert wrote his Symphony No. 3 in just nine days, making it the shortest and most tightly written of all his symphonies, and the brightest. Schumann's First Symphony, written in 1841, was also completed in a short period of time. At the time, Schumann had just married Clara, and it is likely that he wrote down his overflowing musical ideas as they appeared in the score. In Schumann's symphony, Jansons beautifully contrasts the first theme of the first movement with the flowing second theme. The second movement is spacious and beautiful, with plenty of orchestral singing, and the third movement emphasizes a decisive expression. The lively expression of the final movement, with its characteristic rhythm, continues until the powerful conclusion.The entire Schubert symphony is performed with great vigor and care, without omitting any repeats.
