[The Encounter Between a Major Italian Baroque Composer and the Instrument That Swept 18th-Century Europe] Pizzicallo Galante, founded in Paris in 2012 by mandolinist Shivazappa, performs Scarlatti for mandolin and basso continuo. The standard mandolin took its definitive form in Italy and was arguably the most popular instrument throughout 18th-century Europe, particularly in Paris. It was common practice at the time to arrange and perform popular works for the mandolin, and handwritten scores of Scarlatti’s works—rearranged for mandolin and harpsichord—have been discovered. Of the sonatas performed here, K. 77, 81, 88, 89, 90, and 91 are based on manuscripts discovered in Paris in the 1990s; the others were selected and arranged for this recording based on the performers’ research. Each piece features virtuosic highlights and delights the listener with a slightly sentimental and sweet sound, humor, and playful musical touches.
