[The Bolshoi’s Vibrant Production of “Coppélia,” Restored from the Original 19th-Century Version] Swanilda learns that her fiancé, Franz, has become infatuated with the beautiful Coppélia, who sits on the balcony reading every day. The couple comes close to breaking up, but it turns out that Coppélia is not human at all—she is a mechanical doll created by Coppélius. Choreographer Sergei Vikharev—who had performed as a dancer with the Mariinsky Ballet and other companies before passing away suddenly in 2017 at the young age of 55—restored the 19th-century original version for the Bolshoi’s production of “Coppélia,” in which the spirited Swanilda and the innocent Franz shine with vigor. The colorful costumes are also a sight to behold, and the dazzling divertissement—featuring a large ensemble of dancers—is a highlight unique to the Bolshoi Ballet.
