At the beginning of the 19th century, Denmark was hit hard by repeated wars. A group of progressive teachers, pastors, and writers began working to revitalize the weary people. The "Folkehojskole" (adult education institution for the people), which was born as part of these activities, collected traditional Danish songs and published the songbook "Hojskolesangbogen" in 1894, which became so popular with the Danish people that a revised edition was published in 1922. In 1922, a revised edition was published. This collection of 572 songs includes works by Carl Nielsen and other popular composers of the time, all of them with easy-to-listen-to melodies and flowing harmonies, and 2.4 million copies have been published to date. This album is a selection of seasonal pieces from the collection, arranged according to the seasons.The simple and heartfelt harmonies of the Danish National Vocal Ensemble, an elite group affiliated with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, Denmark's most highly competent, show us the "changing seasons in Denmark" in vivid detail.
