Drummer, composer, and producer Makaya McRaven is one of the leading figures in contemporary jazz.
He has made a name for himself with his work on International Anthem, as well as with his reworkings of Gil Scott-Heron and Blue Note albums, and now the leading drummer, composer and producer of contemporary jazz has released "Off the Record," a compilation of four EPs, on XL Off the Record" is a collection of four EPs released on XL Recordings, International Anthem, and Nonesuch. The recordings were made during moments of pure improvisation and live performance, and the sound reflects the space and even the presence of the audience. It consists of four EPs, "Techno Logic," "The People's Mixtape," "Hidden Out!" and "PopUp Shop," which are independent of each other but organically connected.
This is Makaya's first work since his 2022 masterpiece In These Times, which GRAMMY described as "the most ambitious work in McRaven's history," and reiterates the essence of the "organic beat music" that Makaya established with his 2015 debut In the Moment and then deepened with Highly Rare (2017), Where We Come From" (2018), and "Universal Beings" (2018). Makaya reconstructs his live sound sources into his own unique sound world through layers of editing, overdubs, and post-production in his home studio in Chicago. Off the Record," a compilation of four EPs, is not just a collection of sound files, but also a document celebrating a musical moment that was born out of "being there," filled with creativity and collaboration.
In this day and age, people are easily connected through smartphones and the virtual world. At the same time, however, the line between what is real and what is fake is becoming increasingly blurred. What is really important is to have actually "been there. There is nothing that can compare to the experience of being there and receiving the sound with one's body.
