This is the only live recording of Charles Munsch's "Daphnis" from the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1961. The studio recording was made in February of that year and is highly acclaimed as a masterpiece, but it is hard to deny the feeling that the sound is flat and even. This is a great performance that intensely presents the peaks and valleys of the music in a way that only a live performance can. Hats off to the fervor and power of this performance. The brilliant roar of the trumpet is truly astonishing. The tone of the golden age of the Boston Symphony Orchestra is gorgeous itself. The strings are lustrous and the brass is full of elegance without falling into metallic quality. The maestro improvised frequently, moving the tempo and never letting up. La Valse" is another bold and exuberant orchestral drive bursting with Munsch's style. The magical bar handling of tightening and loosening the tempi was a real treat. Noise and missing parts have been corrected by the discovery of a new stereo recording source, and you can enjoy the sound pressure and quality that are incomparable to the previously released recordings.
