Medusa, pioneers of Mexican hard rock, have released their first full-length album compiling previously unreleased singles and session recordings via a Spanish reissue label known for unearthing gems by Crystalogger and Jody. A rare release that showcases the appeal of Central American rock! Medusa was a pioneering band in Mexico’s hard and heavy rock scene. Formed on “Day of the Dead” in 1972, the group centered around guitarist Luis Antonio “Tónio” Urquiza, drummer Víctor Moreno, and bassist/vocalist Javier Plasencia. Drawing inspiration from Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath, the global student movements of 1968, the 1971 Halconazo incident (the violent suppression of student protests in Mexico City that resulted in numerous deaths), and the "Avandalo" festival—often called the Mexican version of Woodstock—they established their popularity by pursuing a unique brand of socially conscious Spanish-language rock imbued with poetic power. They are respected by the new generation of musicians as pioneers of heavy metal and early stoner rock in Mexico. This album is the band’s first full-length compilation, combining their early singles with rare session recordings from the 1980s and 1990s that were miraculously preserved in Victor Moreno’s possession. It is packed with their original sound—raw and heavy, yet imbued with a sense of nostalgia. Though a familiar presence in the Mexican rock scene alongside bands like Peace & Love, DugDug’s, and El Ritual, this unknown band never gained much international recognition due to a lack of recorded material. Now, their hidden charm is revealed for the first time!
