New work from up-and-coming Canadian electronic producer Marie Davidson is now available on the Soulwax label Deewee. The new album balances the melodic pop sensibility of her previous work with a tendency to return to the dance floor, breaking new ground. Marie Davidson is a Montreal, Canada-based artist who made her solo album debut in 2014 and established her popularity with the hit "Working Class Woman" (2018) on the British Ninja Tune label, and in 2020, a remix from the same album (remixed by Soulwax) was also nominated for a Grammy, and expectations have been high for further growth. City Of Clowns" is Davidson's first album for Deewee, the Soulwax-led label (his sixth album in total). The first single, "Y.A.A.M.," is a low, muscular electro track reminiscent of Miss Kitten.Contrarian" is one of the best floor bangers on the release to date, with rave and acid swirling over a fast beat (it made Pitchfork's weekly playlist). The album balances a return to floor mode with a unique sound world that is both danceable and listenable.
