Jean-Philippe Rameau’s harpsichord works can be described as “music woven from a magnificent balance of intellect and emotion.” The world depicted through the virtuosity of the modern keyboard—with its sweet, elegant tones, expressions rich in wit and playfulness, and melodious, approachable melodies—is like a series of scenes from a theatrical score unfolding at a dizzying pace. Shinichiro Nakano, who has long been a leading figure in the harpsichord world, brings to life the “chic” of French Rococo—a style deeply imbued with musical curiosity and social and cultural trends—for the modern era. Born in Kyoto in 1964. Graduated from the Department of Performance (Early Music) at Toho Gakuen School of Music in 1986. In 1990, he won the “Osaka Cultural Festival Gold Prize” for his four-night solo recital series, “A Journey Through European Harpsichord Music.” In 1991, he performed in the Couperin Cycle at the “Versailles Early Music Festival” in France. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with leading masters from Europe and America, he was selected as one of the “Nine Harpsichordists of the World.” In 1992, he was invited to the “Berkeley Early Music Festival” as the youngest soloist. Since then, he has continued to tour Europe on invitation, performing in the UK (Wigmore Hall, BBC Japan Season), Germany (Leipzig Bach Festival), the Czech Republic, and elsewhere. He has garnered acclaim in various locations, being described as an “exceptional harpsichordist” and a “feast for the ears.” Furthermore, his performances of Bach’s *Goldberg Variations*, which he has continued to present in Japan for many years, remain highly acclaimed to this day. He has received rave reviews such as: “His sincere approach to portraying the world of each variation as faithfully as possible is deeply moving”; “Considering the legacy of his predecessors, Nakano’s interpretation, firmly grounded in reality, is far more persuasive”; and “I look forward to witnessing further layers of maturity added to this fundamental interpretation.” In 2000, he won the 38th Record Academy Award for his CD *The Goldberg Variations*. He received the 22nd Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award in 2003, the Grand Prize at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival in 2004, and the 47th Record Academy Award in 2009 for *The Queen’s Altar: Works by Purcell*. In 2010, she published her first harpsichord method book in Japanese, *Let’s Play the Harpsichord: A Collection of Masterpieces for Beginners* (Ongaku no Tomo Sha). Furthermore, the recording of *François Couperin: Complete Clavecin Works (6 Volumes)*, which began in 2020 at the Salamanca Hall in Gifu Prefecture, is scheduled for completion in 2025. Her lecture-recitals, featuring a wide-ranging repertoire and engaging commentary, have garnered great popularity throughout Japan. She is currently dedicated to mentoring the next generation of musicians at institutions such as Kyoto City University of Arts and Nagoya College of Music.
