A masterpiece of 1970s West Coast black independent jazz is finally available on CD for the first time in the world! Spiritual, funky, mellow, Latin, all the essences shine freshly in this seaside masterpiece. Al Williams, who was credited on percussion on Leroy Vinegar's rare groove masterpiece "The Kid," is an important figure in Southern California with a career as a music promoter and club owner as well as a jazz drummer. He also worked with the bands of Hampton Haws, Teddy Edwards, and Willie Bobo. This one, Williams' first leader album, was recorded live at a club in LA/Long Beach. The album features Leroy Vinegar on bass, Charles Owens on sax and fl, Dwight Dickerson on p, and many other jazzmen who are also featured on his "Black Jazz" label releases. The jazz funk "Sandance" that opens the album is full of vital power.The fat beats that Williams and Vinegar deliver seem to represent the joy of the musicians. Leon Russell's "This Masquarado" is covered in a melancholy Latin jazz style. The second half of the song is a must-listen, as it builds up to a feverish, hard-hitting climax. The thrilling last song is a cover of Coltrane's "Impressions". Vinegar's bass, buzzing and groaning in the aggressive, fast tempo, is overwhelming. Other songs include the sweet waltz jazz piece "Love Spring" and the beautiful Latin mellow "Erik's Tune," making this live album and live performance a masterpiece.
