This video was recorded during Christmas Week 1964. The main program is Mozart's Symphony No. 40, but the center of attention is still his own "Nocturne," written in 1958, during Britten's full period, a series of eight songs for tenor and small orchestra that, rather than depicting a nocturnal atmosphere, is a series of poems connected to "sleep, dreams, and death," with verses that connect to "death. The songs themselves are dedicated to Mahler's widow, Alma Mahler-Werfle, but in fact, they were written for his very "friend," Pears, and were undoubtedly written with his singing in mind. The intimacy between the two is palpable in this video. Pears' fresh voice is even sublime. Mozart's symphony was recently reissued on CD by the Moulting's, but when you see it on film, you will understand how modern Britten's approach is.Bonus footage is a color film from the mid-1970s, recorded at Britten's home in Snape Maltings. Although it is an excerpt, it is a rare and unique recording of this song in Britten. Naxos Japan
