Recorded live at the Styriarte Festival in Graz in July 2015, this is the recording of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" that Arnoncourt, who died on March 5, 2016 at the age of 86, had been eagerly awaiting for its release as the culmination of his musical life. The performances, which took place July 4-6, 2015, were broadcast live on TV by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation with the Concentus and A Schönberg Choirs and an outstanding lineup of singers, and created quite a stir. On July 22, Arnoncourt conducted the "Missa Solemnis" once more at the Salzburg Festival, and it was the last performance of his life. Arnoncourt first performed "Missa solemnis" at the opening concert of the Salzburg Festival in 1992, a monumental performance that marked his debut at the festival. After that, he only performed it in 1998 and 2012, and this "Missa solemnis" was the first time he performed it with his hand-picked contingent.
