Rare recordings of Furtwängler's successor, Celibidacke! A charismatic young man with passion inside makes the Berliner Philharmoniker sound passionate! A rare recording of Celibidacke's performance with the Berlin Philharmonic shortly after the war. The ALTUS label has licensed and remastered the long out-of-print TAHRA label masterpieces for reissue. The young Celibidacke, who was considered to be Furtwängler's successor, gives a powerful performance full of energy, and the sound quality has been restored. The Berlin Philharmonic was in the midst of a turbulent period when Furtwängler was suspended for collaborating with the Nazis and his successor, Borcherdt, was killed by accidental gunfire from the U.S. Army. He was recognized as the de facto successor to Furtwängler, who became the acting chief conductor until Furtwängler returned to the orchestra in 1947. Although the performance recorded here is a bit rougher than that of his later years, he boldly controls the tempo and tension and builds a white-hot music from a slow and solemn Adagio to a powerful and propulsive Allegro. The Leonore No. 3 explodes at the end after enduring the music slowly and patiently, and the Brahms No. 4 is a dense, dark, and emotional work. The music is a magnificent attempt to express and convey these vivid images while struggling to face them.This is a performance that clearly shows glimpses of charisma, but also harbors something sordid inside that has yet to be sorted out, as only Celibidacke could have done at this time. The Berlin Philharmonic's sound, which has a distinctly Furtwänglerian flavor, further deepens the appeal of this recording. King International
