A Fulfilling Performance by Reipreich and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra: The Second Installment of the 20th-Century Polish Music Series Alexander Liepreich is one of today’s most acclaimed conductors. Born in Regensburg in 1968, he studied under Abbado and Gielen and will appear as a guest conductor with the Osaka Philharmonic in December 2015. In 2012, he became the first foreigner to serve as Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he launched a series dedicated to 20th-century Polish music. This series focuses primarily on Lutosławski’s orchestral works, combined with pieces by other 20th-century Polish composers; it also features composers who left Poland, such as Tansman and Weinberg, making it a project that Polish music fans will find irresistible. The second installment features substantial works by Lutosławski and Szymanowski. Although both are relatively early works, they allow listeners to appreciate the charm of these composers just before they established their distinctive styles. Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 2, composed in 1909, employs complex compositional techniques heavily influenced by Wagner and Richard Strauss, yet unfolds a sweet world brimming with Szymanowski’s signature narcissism. Reiprich’s interpretation masterfully captures a Richard Strauss-esque decadent beauty and is simply exquisite. Lutosławski’s *Book for Orchestra* was composed in 1968 and commissioned by the city of Hagen, Germany. Beginning with the eerie sounds of string glissandos, the piece conveys a message that ultimately leads toward collapse. The 1958 *Funeral Music* is a work for string orchestra written in memory of Bartók’s death. Composed using the twelve-tone technique, its unique, dark timbre is reminiscent of the black-and-white films of Wajda and Kawalerowicz. King International
