The Zabine Meyer Wind Ensemble, which normally consists of about eight musicians, has been expanded to 16, and this disc features three truly interesting works for wind instruments: R. Strauss' "Serenade for 13 Winds" was written when he was still a student, at about the same time as Dvorak's Op. 44, and the "Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments" was written when he was a student, It is also enjoyable to compare the two works. On the other hand, "Sonatina No. 2" (published as "Symphony for Wind Instruments"), known by the title of "Pleasant Workplace," is a large work of over 30 minutes written in his later years.
