Richard Hawley is a singer/songwriter from Sheffield, England, who was a member of the Brit-pop group Longpigs in the 1990s, and is also known for his one-time stint in Pulp. His eighth studio solo album has been released. The new album, "FURTHER," is his first in four years since his last album, "HOLLOW MEADOWS," in 2015, which made the UK Top 10. The year 2019, when the album will be released, will also mark the 20th anniversary of his solo debut. The first thing to note about this album is its title. Richard, who is from Sheffield, has titled his previous solo albums after places and symbols in his hometown of Sheffield, but the title of this album is simply "FURTHER". The title of this new album is simply "FURTHER." The title, which takes a different direction from his previous albums, is said to express his spirit of "moving forward without letting go of the past. The overall mood of "FURTHER" is optimistic, and was produced largely in Sheffield by Richard, his band, and Colin Elliot and Shez Sheridan, who also produced the album with Richard. I wanted to set myself the challenge of keeping the overall tempo up-tempo and keeping every song to about three minutes," he says."Can you send a message like a bullet? Do you think you can still do that? Perhaps in part due to this challenge, FURTHER is Richard Hawley's most straightforward album to date, clocking in at under 40 minutes. The first single "Off My Mind," which opens the album, is an austere rock 'n' roll number that sets the tone for the entire album as his beloved Rickenbacker roars to life. The up-tempo side of "FURTHER" is also represented by "Alone," a melancholy rock number with an impressive riff, "Galley Girl," an outlaw tale, and "Is There A Pill," which has a grunge feel to it. And the depth and thoughtfulness of the album is represented by "My Little Treasures," which took Richard 12 years to record. Inspired by a personal experience he encountered with two of his father's oldest friends, the song offers a peek into the complex emotions of that time.Also included are, of course, the stirring ballads that are an integral part of Richard Hawley's albums, such as the simple yet beautiful "Emilina," the poignant "Midnight Train," and "Doors," which quietly closes the album.
