Description:
Complete Organ Sonatas by Jan Albert van Eyken! A must for fans of Romantic organ music, this disc features the complete organ sonatas (using the first edition score) and other major works by Jan Albert van Eyken (1823-1868), a Dutch composer/organist who was admired by many, including Robert Schumann. Like Mendelssohn's organ sonatas, van Eyken's sonatas do not necessarily adhere to sonata form, but are characterized by a free compositional style that brings out the variety of sounds of the instruments. In addition to the sonatas, there are other attractive works such as "Toccata and Fugue on a Theme of B.A.C.H.," which seems to anticipate the harmonies of the late Romantic period, and variations on a theme from the old Dutch national anthem. The organ is a Richard Ibach organ (1864) from St. Hertoldis Church in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands. The extensive booklet includes biographical information about van Eijken, a work-by-work description for each piece recorded, and a description of the Ibach organ used in this project (in English and German).
