Burning Karajan! Goltz singing! Fidelio" at the Salzburg Festival in 1957! In 1956, Karajan became the music director of the Salzburg Festival, and the 1957 festival was marked by the rapid spread of Karajan's colors. This live performance of "Fidelio" from the opening night of the Salzburg Festival in 1957 is a perfect example of the dashing and dynamic performances that characterized Karajan in the 1950s. The cast included Christel Goltz as Leonore, known for her roles as Salome and Elektra; Giuseppe Zampieri as Florestan, Karajan's favorite tenor at the time; Otto Edelman as Rocco; Sena Jurinacci as Marzelline; Paul Scheffler as Don Pizzaro; and the then-Winner of the "Fidelio" role, Paul Schaeffler. Don Pizzaro was the best cast in Vienna at the time. This live performance is a perfect reminder of Karajan in his prime. The sound quality, although monaural, is probably one of the best for 1957. ［Comment courtesy of King International.]
