Holliger has devoted himself to conducting since the 1980s and has continued to perform and record with this orchestra in recent years. His previous release on the Hensler label—Kecklan’s collection of orchestral arrangements (93286)—featured rare works, including the world premiere recording of Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasy” in an orchestral arrangement. Holliger’s interpretation of Debussy possesses a rich, evocative, and ever-changing charm. In particular, the works included on this disc are a collection of pieces in which woodwind instruments—such as the clarinet, flute, and saxophone—take on solo parts. Although Holiger is also a world-renowned oboist, the phrasing in these works is refined down to the finest details—an interpretation that can only come from a woodwind player—bringing the music to life. In particular, the exquisite atmosphere of “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” is outstanding. Furthermore, the performers taking on the solo parts are all highly skilled, and I take my hat off to the orchestration, which demonstrates exceptional leadership and ensemble skills.
