Don’t Miss It! Varèse’s “America” for Two Pianos A collection of works by Edgar Varèse, the “dynamic” composer, and Feldman, the “contemplative” composer who deeply admired Varèse. Feldman’s works (1) and (3) feature his signature music, reminiscent of waves steadily ebbing and flowing. Even when performed on five pianos, there is a strange sensation that the silence is amplified. Sandwiched between them is Varèse’s “America”—a work that strongly evokes the influence of “The Rite of Spring.” Originally a large-scale orchestral work featuring 50 wind players and a nearly nonstop percussion section, the title “America” refers not only to the geographical location but also symbolizes innovation, adventure, and discovery. It will be interesting to see how this large-scale work has been arranged. After Varèse’s death, Feldman was so captivated by him that he wrote, “What would my life have been like without Varèse?” He even went so far as to say that he was imitating Varèse.
