The Cinquecento—the pinnacle of Renaissance male vocal ensembles—performs Lunyar’s Mass! Cinquecento, the premier Renaissance-style male vocal ensemble, continues to deliver a string of striking releases! Two Masses by Jacob Luniar, a composer of the Flemish School who was active at the Habsburg court! “Cinquecento” is the premier Renaissance-style male vocal ensemble, bringing together professional singers from across Europe (Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland). To date, Cinquecento has enriched its discography with little-known Renaissance programs centered on the Flemish School, featuring composers such as Jean Richafort, Philippe Schendorf, and Philippe de Monte. Their new album marks a return to the music of Lunyar, their first since the Mass *SuperOeniadesNymphae* (CDA67640), which was their second release on Hyperion. Jakob Lunyar (c. 1540–1599) was a Flemish School composer active at the Habsburg courts in Prague and Innsbruck. Having left behind outstanding works and achievements as a composer of church music—and reportedly praised by his contemporary Lassus as “trefflich (wonderful!)”—Lunard’s two Masses and motets are brought to life by Cinquecento’s supple, mellow, and expressive vocals. Incidentally, the striking cover design—now a familiar sight on Cinquecento’s albums—features a work by the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527–1593), who was active in the 16th century, the same era as Lunyar and his contemporaries.
