[CD3,4,5] = A vivid story with vivid characters and music. =The revival of "Médée" by Christie and Les Arts Florissants in 1984 has made it the only lyric tragedy by Charpentier that is still performed today. The recording was made shortly after the founding of Les Arts Florissants, but it is surprising to hear the highest level of performance from the very beginning. Charpentier's music for the story of Mede (Medea), who kills her own son in revenge for the man who abandoned her, makes effective and dramatic use of chromatic scales and modulations. The tension-filled performance by Christie, Leszar Florissant, and the great singers is still fresh. [CD6] = Peter's sorrows in a haunting dissonance = Unlike Italy and Germany, the Passion genre was not as popular in France. This repudiation of Peter is an exception to this trend.With a very restricted composition of only five voices and bass continuo, the final chorus expresses Peter's grief, driven by contrition, in a haunting dissonance. Each of the pieces in "Meditations for Lent" consists of a short dramatic scene depicting the main characters of the Passion (Jesus, Judas, Peter, Pilate, the Virgin Mary, and Mary Magdalene). [In the mid-16th century, when the Jesuits were established in France and the university was founded, student drama became a part of the curriculum. When the Jesuits founded France in the mid-16th century and the university was established, student theater became part of the curriculum. At first, tragedies and comedies were performed with pious themes and in Latin, but gradually interludes and ballets sung in French were added. One of the major productions was "David and Jonathan," from a French libretto by Father Bretonneau.It appears to follow Lully's style of five acts with a prologue, but whereas Lully's prologue is a glorification of Louis XIV, Charpentier's begins abruptly at the heart of the story (and differs from Lully's style in that there is no recitative). (Also, the absence of a recitative differs from Lully's style.) The ghost of Samuel announces to Saul his own death and the death of his son Jonathan, and that David will succeed Saul as king of Israel. After this impressive prologue, each act, with the exception of Act 5, focuses on an individual character, highlighting their emotions and their relationship with God and the contrasts between good and evil, public and private.
