Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra & John Eliot Gardiner

Description:

Fire and Crystal - The ultimate Brahms Zycles for a passionate and crystal clear performance. Deutsche Grammophon is pleased to announce the release of the complete Brahms symphonies recorded by British conductor John Eliot Gardiner with the world-renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra on three CDs, recorded live from September 2021 to January 2023 at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Recorded live at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam between September 2021 and January 2023, the CDs offer Gardiner's "passionate, clear," and lucid performances. Gardiner, who recorded the Brahms project with the Orkestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique in 2007, says of his return to the recording eighteen years later: "The 2007 recording was very stimulating. The 2007 recording was a very exciting experience. It was a thorough re-evaluation of Brahms's musical world, both from the point of view of ancient instruments and from the point of view of the study of performance that is now customary. We are recording these symphonies again, first, because they are enduring masterpieces, miraculous from their inception, and rewarding every time we perform them. Secondly, I felt the need and personal challenge to develop this important experience and extend the results and interpretations to orchestras that use modern instruments, especially with orchestras as flexible and outstanding as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. So I sought a new fusion of styles and approaches. Jorge Luis Borges (in his poem "To Brahms") described it as "fire and crystal," and that is what we have tried to achieve. It is well known that Brahms took many years to complete his First Symphony. He was too conscious of the great precedent set by Beethoven. However, after the great success of the first performance of the majestic No. 1 in 1876, he went on to create three more masterpieces of the genre, the first of which, No. 2, was completed a year later in 1877. No. 2 was published a year later in 1877, No. 3 in 1883, and No. 4 in 1885. Gardiner and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra explore each of these four distinct works in depth and detail. The 24-page booklet includes Gardiner's personal comments, liner notes by Peter Quantrill (in English and German), and biographies of the conductor and orchestra. Digipak edition.
