A collection of Brahms Lieder by the masterful duo of German Lieder. Christian Gerhaher and Gerold Huber visited Japan for the first time in 12 years for the Tokyo Spring Music Festival this year (2025), and brought us the essence of German lieder with great depth. The latest album by this duo is a collection of Brahms songs. In their nearly 40 years of collaboration, they have recorded two important collections of Brahms' songs, "Four Solemn Songs" (2001) and "The Beautiful Tale of Magellone" (2014), but this is the first time they have woven an anthology of so-called Brahms songs. Gerhaherl, who says, "It takes vocal maturity to express the richness of Brahms's songs," has finally achieved this in his mid-50s, and this album includes the Op. 32, which includes one of Brahms's most famous songs, "My Queen, What Thou Art," and the third movement of the Violin Sonata No. 1 The album is exquisitely composed with two main collections of Brahms' songs, including "My Queen, What Hast Thou?Of special note is the "Rain Songs" song cycle, an early draft of the four songs that eventually became the "Eight Songs and Songs, Op. 59," which was restored in the 21st century by German musicologist Michael Storck and published by Henle. Gerhaherl considers the composition of the four songs to be a sonata work in sonata movement - adagio scherzo with a small finale, so to speak, with voices. This is the first live recording of Gerhaherl and Huber's Lieder, made last October at the Reichstadtstadt in Neumark, a concert hall known for its excellent acoustics. As is typical of this perfectionist duo, even though it is a live recording, the high standards they have set so far are maintained, but with the added concentration and exuberance that only a concert recording can provide.
