The entirety of Dick Hyman's masterpiece, a Scott Joplin classic, has been revived with the latest remastering! Dick Hyman was born on March 8, 1927 in New York, USA. After studying classical piano, he studied jazz piano with Teddy Wilson and became a professional pianist in 1948, playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Red Novo, Benny Goodman, and others. From January to April 1975, Dick Hyman recorded the complete piano works of ragtime legend Scott Joplin at RCA Studio A in New York City. The album was originally released as a 5-LP set and won the Japan Arts Festival Excellence Award in 1975. In this release, all of the music from the 5 LP set is included on 3 CDs.Hyman's recording covers all of Joplin's piano works, including the six short exercises that comprise the 1908 "School of Ragtime," and includes a track in which Eubie Blake, then 92, Joplin's friend and an excellent ragtime player, reads the preamble printed on the score The album also includes a track in which Eubie Blake, then 92, a friend of Joplin's and an excellent ragtime player, reads the preamble printed on the score. Also included are some of Joplin's lesser-known marches and waltzes. Also included are 12 tracks of Hyman's own improvisations on Joplin themes. This is supposed to show Joplin's influence on the development of jazz harmony and melody. When this LP was first released, the British "Gramophone" magazine wrote, "The extreme musical quality of Hyman's playing is evidenced throughout this complete recording. He pays attention to issues of tempo, texture, phrasing, and dynamics as if he were playing one of Chopin's 24 preludes.For example, I particularly liked the rippling, lilting touches of "Cascade" and "Scott Joplin's New Rag," with Hyman's clean articulation and rhythmic exuberance that were delightful....
