Description:

The Freitag Academy, an up-and-coming Swiss period instrument ensemble, takes on the challenge of restoring Bach's original works. Many of Bach's works have been skillfully recycled from his own and others' works and made into new works. Some of the originals have been lost, but by studying the various ways in which Bach converted old works into new ones, it is sometimes possible to infer and restore the appearance of the originals to some extent. This album is a modern reconstruction of the now lost originals of the three concertos using such methods. The "Harpsichord Concerto in A major, BWV 1055" was originally a concerto for oboe d'amore in the same key, and many performers have restored and recorded it. (The original Larghetto movement is also included on a separate track.) Bach also sometimes added choral parts and choral melodies to existing works and converted them into cantatas, and the "Triple Concerto in G major for Flute, Oboe d'Amore, and Violin" was reconstructed from the opening chorus of each of the three cantatas, BWV 99, BWV 125, and BWV 115. It is reminiscent of the Brandenburg Concerto. In this way, the Freitag Academy points to the fascinating genre hybridity of these lost compositions of Bach and brings them back to life. In her diverse activities as a musician, cultural creator, and musical mediator, Katharina Zuske is the director of the Freitag Academy, an ensemble she co-founded in 1993 based in Bern, Switzerland. She has studied Baroque oboe with Qu Evinge, Hans-Peter Westermann, and others, and has performed as a chamber musician and soloist with numerous renowned ensembles, including the Venice Baroque Orchestra, the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music, i Barockisti, and the period instrument orchestra "La Scintilla" at the Zurich Opera House. Since 2002 she has been organizing and realizing her own programs at the "Freitag Academy", where she has successfully collaborated with artists from different fields such as contemporary music, contemporary dance, visual arts and literature, as well as baroque music. She has been successfully collaborating with artists from different fields such as contemporary music, contemporary dance, visual arts, literature, as well as baroque music. Sony Music
