Description:
The world's first compilation of the complete Columbia recordings of the famous conductor Artur Rozinski, a long-awaited complete reissue of the highly combustible dramatic performance born from the fusion of the romanticistic performance tradition of the 19th century and the objective performance style of the 20th century from the authorized original recordings! The latest in a series of box sets tracing the golden age of major American orchestras, the box set includes recordings by John Barbirolli/New York Philharmonic, Fritz Reiner/Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and a compilation of orchestras and conductors that colored American culture in the 1940s and 1950s. Sony Classical, which has been releasing a series of boxes, will release a 16-CD set of the complete recordings of Artur Rozinski and the New York Philharmonic in the spring of 2021, following the 120-CD set of Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.Artur Rozinski (1892-1958), the "fiery, fiery-tempered Polish conductor" whom Toscanini praised highly, was regarded as one of the most exciting young conductors in America in the 1930s, and in 1937, during his tenure as Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra, he guest conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. His spectacular performance of R. Strauss's "Elektra," which he conducted as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic in 1937, was broadcast on radio throughout the United States and is still considered one of the greatest performances in the orchestra's history. His interpretation of the music was influenced by Toscanini, whom Lodzinski looked up to as a role model, and he earned a reputation as a "fiery, fiery-tempered Polish conductor" (it is said that he carried a pistol in his pocket to ward off disgruntled players), He was music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1929-33) and the Cleveland Orchestra (1933-43) (he became an American citizen in 1933), gave the American premiere of Shostakovich's opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County" in 1935, and in 1936, led the Vienna Philharmonic as American conductor at the Salzburg In 1936, he became the first American to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival.Toscanini was so impressed with his talent that he entrusted him with recruiting and training the members of the newly organized NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1938. At the time, the orchestra was called the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. He immediately dismissed 14 musicians, including the concertmaster, which caused friction with the management, but on the other hand, he succeeded in revitalizing the orchestra's ensemble. Renowned critic Virgil Thomson exclaimed, "An orchestra we now enjoy listening to...all because of Lodzinski's conducting." (1/3) Sony Music
