Expressing their frustration and anger towards society with their DIY punk sound and message-driven lyrics, Sleaford Mods have released their album "The Demise of Planet X" on Rough Trade Records. The album is Andrew Fane and Jason Williamson's most ambitious and large-scale work to date, and features the first-ever musical participation and performance by actor Gwendoline Christie ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," "Game of Thrones"). In addition to a rare guest appearance by former Life Without Buildings frontwoman Sue Tompkins, the album features collaborations with 4AD's Aldous Harding, soul singer Liam Bailey, and grime MC Snowy. Snowy.The latter two are both from Nottingham, the band's hometown. The Good Life" is a portrait of a mixed feeling of social and personal disintegration. Over an urgent beat and captivating melody by Andrew Fane, Williamson's machine-gun delivery depicts the impact of his own statements that have rippled through the music scene. Big Special and Gwendolyn Christie are the voices of his inner conflict and anguish, shaken by the turmoil created by his remarks. The Good Life" is a song about belittling other bands and the joy and pain it brings to him. I'm asking myself - why do I belittle bands? Why do I keep doing it? Gwendolyn and Big Special are the embodiment of my inner voice, arguing over the inner conflict of whether I should enjoy the Good Life or surrender to the chaos," Williamson says. The Demise of Planet X represents a life lived in a state in which the future is very difficult to predict, and a life shaped by collective trauma. When I wrote my previous work, it was about stagnation - a country that was like a corpse, not breathing. In the three years since then, that corpse has been torn apart by war, genocide, and the lingering psychological effects of the Corona disaster, transforming social networking sites into grotesque and distorted sites of digital manipulation. It is as if we are living among the ruins. It's like a multi-layered, horrifying aberration etched into our collective psyche. I don't know if I should pat myself on the back while the world is going down the shitter, but I'm really happy with The Demise of Planet X.
