Sakari Oramo is a renowned Finnish conductor who was awarded "Conductor of the Year" by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2015. In addition to his current position as Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, he is also Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra (Finland), and Honorary Conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. 2013 Since his appointment as Chief Conductor in 2013, Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra have been actively engaged in the discovery and performance of unknown modern and contemporary works, and have steadily deepened their relationship. The Chandos recordings have received overwhelming critical acclaim, including a special selection in Recorded Arts and Gramophone magazine's "Editor's Choice".The duo's highly anticipated new recording is the Mass in D by Ethel Mary Smythe (1858-1944), one of the great pioneers of women composers of the late 19th century, the first woman to be ordained a dame, and a prominent suffragette. It is Smythe's only large-scale religious work, a Mass in D major and D minor composed for a concert hall rather than a church, in which the liturgical texts of the Mass are sung by four solo singers and a choir, but the second piece, "Gloria," is placed last instead of after the "Kyrie" (second) according to the composer's instructions. Also noteworthy is the excellent solo singing team of four promising young singers, including Catriona Morrison, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, Susanna Harrell, and Ben Johnson.
