Gardner and the NYO's Holst BBC Proms for "The Planets," which has made a splash! Edward Gardner is a young British maestro who has been active as the young music director of the English National Opera and increasingly as the principal conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic since 2015. Gardner has conducted England's National Youth Orchestra (NYO) in Holst's "The Planets" for Chandos! The NYO is an orchestra of elite young musicians between the ages of 13 and 19, selected through a rigorous audition process from all over the UK. The NYO is a youth orchestra with proven ability, and has been a regular participant in the BBC Proms, winning the Royal Philharmonic Society's Best Ensemble Award in 2011 and The Queen Medal forMusic from the British Royal Family in 2012. The Queen Medal forMusic" was awarded by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2012.In particular, Gardner and the NYO's "The Planets" and "Zarathustra Speaks" were performed at the 2016 BBC Proms, a program that created quite a stir in the UK, with rave reviews by The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. This recording was made at the Birmingham Symphony Hall just days after the great success at the BBC Proms, and the young, energetic sound of Gardner and the NYO has been recorded on high-quality SACD and analog vinyl.
