■Orchestral works by Eugene Goossens (1893-1962), one of the forgotten legacies of Richard Hickox (1948-2008), who died suddenly in 2008, are succeeded by British music evangelist Andrew Davis! ■In the southern hemisphere of Australia, Goussens was chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and director of the New South Wales Conservatory in Sydney, where he left behind works with a distinctly French character influenced by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky, all of which were his forte. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor, Andrew Davis, will present a program of "Concert Pieces," including "Kaleidoscope," "Two Nature Poems," and "Four Thoughts," which the composer himself arranged from "piano works" to "orchestral versions," to fully convey the charm of composer Goossens' exceptional orchestration and harmonic sense. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor Androux Davis will convey the charm of composer Goossens' exceptional orchestration and harmonic sense.This is the birth of an important collection of Goossens' orchestral works that ranks alongside the masterful performances that Vernon Handley bequeathed to ABC Classics.
