The fourth in a series of recordings of the complete Shostakovich symphonies by the Latvian-born conductor Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, of which he is the music director! The first recording in the series, "Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10, et al" (UCCG-1709) won the 58th Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance in the Classical category, and the second recording, "Symphonies Nos. 5, 8, 9, et al" (UCCG-1741/2) also won the same award at the 59th Grammy Awards. Andris Nelsons, born in 1978 in Riga, Latvia, then still a Soviet territory, has a unique perspective on the performance of Shostakovich's music. He was one of the last conductors educated in the Soviet musical tradition. Andris Nelsons, who studied in St. Petersburg for a long time, is one of the few conductors today who has inherited the tradition of the great Russian masters, but also the tradition of the Western masters in the German works that form the core of his repertoire.He is also the 21st Kapellmeister (Chief Conductor) of the prestigious Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany. In the Beethoven anniversary year of 2020, a recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is underway. Universal Music/IMS
