The news of Abbado's death on January 20, 2014, sent shockwaves through the world of music, In 2000, he succumbed to stomach cancer and resigned from the Berlin Philharmonic, but continued to work with the young Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Mozart Orchestra, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, all of which he had organized himself. The flexible music making with like-minded colleagues was a great success. In 1987, Abbado made his first recording of "The Great" with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in his own score, which was very popular at the time. Universal Music/IMS
