The history of Mutter's recordings with Karajan began in 1976. Karajan's discernment in discovering the exceptional talent of Mutter, then 13 years old, and introducing him to the world is evident in Mutter's current status. Their musical collaboration lasted for 13 years until Karajan's death in 1998. Karajan probably tried to set a new standard with the Berlin Philharmonic and Mutter's violin (only the Tchaikovsky, recorded in Karajan's final years, was performed with the Vienna Philharmonic). The set consists of five discs and contains all of the concertos recorded by Karajan and Mutter for DG. The Beethoven and Brahms double concertos feature Meneses, Zeltzer, and a young Yo-Yo Ma.
