Description:

Newly recorded at Van Gelder Studios and featuring great vocalists Judy Niemack, Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein, and others praised by America's leading jazz magazine "Downbeat", here is a remarkable new album! Diane Schuur (b. 1953), Cassandra Wilson (b. 1955), and Diane Reeves (b. 1956) are almost the same age. A veteran singer at the peak of her maturity, Judy Niemack (b. 1954) is back with a new release on Sunnyside, her first since Listening to You with Dan Teffer (2017) and New York Stories with Jim McNeely (2018). Since then. This time around, the world is even more lyrical and romantic than those two works: she sang in her church choir from the age of 7 and studied with opera singers from the age of 17. At the time, she was drawn to classical music, but her interest turned to jazz and she studied improvisation with Gary Foster and Warne Marsh, who are closely associated with Lennie Tristano. In 1977, as a member of Marsh's band, he appeared at the Village Vanguard jazz club in New York City, and has released nearly 20 albums. She has performed with numerous musicians, including Toots Sielmans, Lee Konitz, and Fred Hirsch, and is based in Berlin and New York City, while also showing a willingness to nurture younger musicians. Judy is well known for her adventurous approach, but this time she shows a great deal of her charm as an authentic vocalist. Supporting members include Peter Bernstein, Joe Farnsworth, and other leading contemporary hardboppers, and Eric Alexander also joins on M9 "Let Life Lead You". The historic Rudy Van Gelder Studios was chosen as the recording location (engineered by Maureen Sickler). In addition to such classics as M12 "Born To Be Blue," which is known for Mel Torme's own composition and Helen Merrill's famous singing, the program also includes a number co-written with Bernstein and Alexander, M6 "What's Love Got To Do With It? (The Magic of Love), which was a big hit for Tina Turner and was also performed by Miles Davis. Judy Niemack was praised by the American jazz magazine "Downbeat" as "a vocalist of theatrical depth and perfect enunciation. Compared to her fame in Europe and the United States, she is still underrated in Japan, but there is a great possibility that her abilities will become well known with this new album. She is a talented singer among singers who deserves your attention.
