Maderna (1920-1973) was born in Venice and studied composition at the Conservatory with Maripiero. He is known for his efforts in the development and promotion of Italian avant-garde music. The "Requiem" on this album, composed at the age of 26 and long considered lost, was written in 1943 when he was drafted into World War II and captured by the Germans, Italy's former allies, to the point where he was prepared to die. He was soon released, and it was this experience that inspired him to write this Requiem. This work, written after studying the works of his predecessors Verdi and Berlioz, was finally premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in 2009, 36 years after his death. It is a magnificent work that expresses his pacifism. Naxos Japan
