Manuel Barrueco was born in Cuba on December 16, 1952, and began playing guitar at the age of eight, studying at the Esteban Salas Conservatory in Cuba. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1967 as a political refugee; in 1974, at the age of 22, he won the Concert Artist Guitarist Award and made his Carnegie Hall debut that same year. His skill and musical interpretation, assured technique, sound, and artistry have earned him a reputation as an original guitarist in the same league as Andres Segovia, Julian Bream, and John Williams. His work expanded the repertoire of contemporary music and guitar, leading to collaborations with many well-known composers, including Arvo Pärt and Toru Takemitsu.Toru Takemitsu's last orchestral work, Spectral Canticle, was a double concerto written especially for Manuel Barrueco and violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann.
