Description:
Born in Laurau, Austria, Michael Haydn joined the choir of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna at the age of 8, where he learned singing, violin, and organ. 25 years old, he was a court composer in Salzburg, where he completed more than a dozen masses and 15 symphonies. He also spent a fruitful life in Salzburg, where he worked as an organist at Salzburg Cathedral. Michael Haydn's fame has been overshadowed by that of his older brother Joseph Haydn, but at the time he was highly regarded by Mozart and his son. It is said that Joseph also considered his brother Michael's vocal works superior to his own. While Joseph's vocal style is operatic, Michael's works are full of piety and devotion. This new recording includes three relatively large liturgical works. It is a recording that allows the listener to fully appreciate the religious music that is at the heart of Michael's style.
