Composer Tan Dun was born in Changsha, China. He is known for his style, which uses Western styles but brings Eastern elements to the forefront, and for his orchestral works that employ special instruments. The piano pieces heard here are all technical and dramatic. Eight Memories in Watercolor" is a suite that makes effective use of the Chinese pentatonic scale, with occasional colorful sounds reminiscent of Debussy. The following "C-A-G-E-" is a tribute to John Cage, whom he considers his mentor. Again, the use of Chinese sounds is impressive. The "Film Music Sonata" features four pieces from the film "The Banquet. Trace" is a piece that strikes a perfect balance between sound and silence. Fire," written for pianist Ralph van Raat, offers a taste of Tan Dun's most virtuoso and dramatic side.
