Description:

This is a collection of unknown piano works derived from Armenian folk songs, dances and songs. Kristapol Kara-Murza studied piano, flute, and music theory from an early age and moved to the South Caucasus at the age of 29. He visited villages inhabited by many Armenians and collected hundreds of folk songs and dances. Later, while actively engaged in concert activities as a choral conductor, he founded more than 90 folk choirs in Armenia and trained famous singers. The album includes two of his best-known works, "Potpourri with Armenian Folk Songs" and "Funeral March. The last song of the Potpourri features the melody now known as the Armenian national anthem. Gennady Korganov is a pianist and composer from Georgia. After studying in Leipzig and training as a pianist at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he returned to Georgia in 1880 to continue performing and work as a civil servant, composing in his spare time. His "Bayati" and "Armenian Rhapsody" are descriptive music with Armenian melodies and a hint of Rimsky=Korsakov influence. Romanos Melikian is an Armenian composer and music teacher. He was influenced by Ippolitov-Ivanov and collected folk songs in Tifilis. He is best known for his songs (romances) using these melodies. Emeralds" is his best-known song cycle. This album features a piano arrangement of the work by composer Willi Sargsyan, who was born in 1930. It is performed by U.S.-based pianist Julia Irapetian. She has discovered forgotten Armenian piano music and has given premieres in the U.S., China, Europe, Russia, and Armenia. Naxos Japan
