Ensemble Bonne Corde

Description:

This is a collection of concertos by the enigmatic composer Pereira da Costa, who was 12 years younger than Bach and Handel (the same generation as Tartini, Kwanz, and others) and was the music director of the cathedral in Funchal, the main city of Madeira Island, Portugal. Little is known about the composer's life, but the works in this collection were taken from a collection published in 1741 in London, the capital of England, which had close historical ties to Portugal. The ensemble concerto form, in which two violins and a cello are paired with a string ensemble as a solo instrument group, has remained popular in England following Corelli's precedent published in 1714, and Pereira da Costa's example follows this form, but with Corelli's sense of balance and balance. The music is full of musical excitement, which is unrelated to the composer's low fame, and the performance is very detailed. It would be even more interesting to compare the sonatas with the keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, a master of the Spanish court, published in London in 1738, Handel's Concerto for Ensemble, Op. 6, which appeared the following year, and Avison's Concerto for Ensemble, which was based on Scarlatti's sonatas and was published in 1744. The concertos are also available for purchase. The Ensemble Bonne Cordes, led by Portuguese virtuosos who have been making great strides in recent years in the field of old music in various parts of Europe, is a string ensemble with one soloist in each part and a bass ensemble with a string repellent, giving a thrilling performance with chamber-like intimacy throughout.
